Coffee Creek, CA Fly Fishing Report

Dan Wallentine
Irvine, CA

Body of Water:
Coffee Creek (Trinity County, California)
Date: Sunday, July 26, 2009
# of Fish Caught: 17
Species: Rainbow Trout
Size: Up to 11"
Effective Flies: #10 Royal Stimulator with droppers including #14 Prince Nymph and red Copper John droppers
Summary: For most of the details of this location and day of fishing see Sean's report below; no need to submit duplicate info.

I have always enjoyed secluded mountain streams with the constant sounds of the water and cooperative native fish. Coffee Creek is one of those special places. Sometimes those special places hold surprises too.

Toward the end of the day I was fishing the left side of the stream while Sean was fishing the right. We were in a sort of zone; catching a releasing numerous small fish. As I was moving up to the next pocket my foot slipped off of a rock with a thud and instantly there was a loud shoreline rattle; a short rattle in time but loud nonetheless. It took me a moment to gather my attention and at the same time Sean said, "what was that?"
"It sounded like a rattlesnake," I responded. Then looking to my left, sure enough there he was slithering along the bank away from me. Needless to say, our fishing was interrupted while we photographed and filmed it. In thirty years of fishing this is only my second encounter with a rattler. The first was along Deep Creek in the Lake Arrowhead area of Southern California.

So, be careful and alert when entering and exiting the water there are more native creatures than just the fish.

Lake Davis, CA Fly Fishing Report

Sean Wallentine
Sacramento, CA

Body of Water:
Lake Davis, CA (Plumas County near Portola)
Date: Saturday, August 15, 2009
# of Fish Caught: 1
Species: Rainbow Trout
Size: 14"
Effective Flies: #14 Blood Midge
Summary: My first time on Lake Davis. Fished with some friends. Fishing was slow. Among us we only caught 6 fish. While fish were hitting the surface, the fish we caught were on streamers with droppers and sink tip line.

We fished the west side of the lake using pontoon boats. We took a dirt road down the water's edge a little north of the boat launch.

I actually saw several mature blood midges on the surface (stunningly beautiful adult fly; soft white wings and red body). I also saw brown damsel flies swimming near the surface. There were several adult damsels flying around. Mayflies were abundant and there were caddis as well.

Lake Davis has been very controversial due to some rogue idiot who has twice planted Northern Pike in the lake. The state and feds have both killed the lake twice now. The Pike seem to be gone...for now.

For more on Lake Davis do a Google search or check out this link for general information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Davis,_California

Profile of Burney Creek, CA

Burney Creek is located in Northern California near the community that shares it's name Burney, CA. Burney Creek is situated near legendary fisheries, such as, the Pit River and Hat Creek. As seen in the photo above, the main attraction for Burney Creek is the 129 foot Burney Falls. The falls, river, store and campground are the focus of MacArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The falls were once called the 8th Wonder of the World by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Burney Creek is fed by an underground spring and has a healthy population of rainbow, brown, and brook trout. Fly fishing anglers above the falls will run into predominantly brookies, while below the falls and all the way to Lake Britton rainbows and browns. The lower river is a geology lesson with sections of a white powdery basalt that create stark contrasts of colors. At times, trout lying near the bottom can be seen easily against the white basalt background. Fly fishing on Burney Creek can relinquish stunning pictures of nature along with the pictures of trout caught on a fly.

Two For One Special

One of the benefits of fishing with two flies is an occasional "two for one special." Take for instance my recent day on the Trinity River. I was fishing two nymphs: a bead head Prince and a Copper John. On my third cast the indicator darted one direction then another and I felt a fairly nice fish tugging on me. Nope. It was two fish.

I pulled my line to the surface and found two 10 inch Rainbows, one attached to each fly. They looked like twins. One cast. Two fish. Cool.

This isn't the first time it's happened to me. Believe it or not, it's happened to me numerous times. One day on the San Juan River in New Mexico it happened twice in one day! That was the same day I had a small Rainbow on the end of my line and a 20+ inch meat eating bow came out of nowhere and swallowed my smaller catch. That also happened twice on that day. I landed one of those fish and was accused of bait fishing. Unfairly. But, I digress...

What this indicates is that if you begin excelling at nymph fishing, getting those flies down deep AND fishing with two flies (sometimes even three), you WILL catch more fish. Frankly, there's no reason to ever fish with one fly. I can't remember the last time I had one lonely fly on the end of my line.

Call me an opportunist. Feel free. You would be right! Any opportunity to increase my catch rates--within the bounds of the law and fly fishing ethics--I am all for it.

Maybe someday you can enjoy a "two for one special." One cast, two fish. Double the fun. Enjoy!
