Beaver Creek, CA Fly Fishing Report

Beaver Creek, CA

Went to Calaveras Big Trees SP on July 16th and fished Beaver Creek. It was a beautiful day and the creek is in fantastic shape. I fished a Stimulator the whole time catching some nice rainbows. With all the snow we had this year, the smaller creeks and rivers are perfect now.

Fly Fishing Report For Bell Creek, CA

Went fishing to Bell Creek (near Pinecrest, CA) on 7/8/11 with my friend Darrel. It was his first time fly fishing.

Where: Bell Creek at Crabtree Trailhead
Who: Jon and Darrel
What: 9 Brook Trout (8 for me and 1 for Darrel)
Pattern: VFG Nymph

We fished for five hours along about a quarter of a mile stretch of the creek, near the parking lot for Crabtree Trailhead. I caught my eight trout all out of an eddie behind a large boulder partly lying in the river. The fish were small, the biggest being 9 inches long. But there were plenty and they were hungry!

Fly Fishing Report From Cheshire, England

Cheshire, England

We had recently joined our local fishing club B.M.A.C. (Bay Molton Angling Club) with some of the best fishing on offer in the North West region, my local river Bollin, Birkin and Dane on offer as well as numerous carp waters. Carp waters? for the fluff chucker ? It was following a presentation by Rob Doyle at the GAIA meeting that really inspired us to give it a go.

After several hours casting practice it was time for some fun. I set up my 9ft 6# and tied on an imitation dog biscuit tied from deer hair, I know its not strictly a true "fly" but with only a couple of hours light left it was fair game. Starting well away from any of the Course anglers a few free dog biscuits were scattered near the Lilly pads and the wait was on.

Its was Dads turn and after a few more biscuits going in, the interest was still there, it was in again and as soon as the imitation hit the water a fish smashed into it, not a Carp but a Chub, a nice fish and one neither of us had ever caught on the fly.

A couple of the course anglers noticed what was going on and came over to have a chat as I hooked into my second carp of the evening, with three fish in the first forty or so minutes the course boys really wanted to find out more about this Fly Fishing lark, a few converts in the making I think?!!.

Three carp for myself, a nice common and chub for my dad was the sum total of the evening, the number we had missed was unbelievable, and just watching and waiting for theses fish to suck in your fly is unbearable at times. Well worth a go if you get the chance, I'll certainly be doing it all again very soon.
Until Next Time...........Tight Lines

Fly Fishing Report From An Irish Angler

July 8, 2011

River Slaney, Co. Wexford, Ireland, Evening Sea Trout.

Fished the Slaney yesterday evening for sea trout below Scarawalsh old bridge accompanied by visiting angler David Balsdon. A native of Devon who fishes the famous River Torridge, David was looking forward to casting a line on this equally famous Irish river. Conditions were not great, with a cool south easterly wind blowing upstream driving a constant mist of rain before it. Perseverance though did pay off, with David netting a three quarter pound sea trout tempted by a Kill Devil Spider as dusk closed in.

In good condition, fat and beautifully spotted, the sea trout took with a bang giving a good account of itself before being netted, photographed, and returned. David fished on until close to mid night catching parr and small brownies, along with a few tentative plucks from their migratory cousins, however the brace alluded him. Conditions were tough it has to be said, the upstream wind in particular making life difficult, but hey that's fishing. David appreciated the experience, and if the opportunity arises would most definitely make a return visit.

Calavaras River, CA Fly Fishing Report

July 7th 2011

Well, with the flows here in the Sierra's raging and out of control, it will be another month before they settle down. So what's a fly fisherman to do? Start hitting small local streams and rivers not affected by the tremendous snowpack and melt going on.

I went to fish the Calavaras River below the New Hogan Dam this morning. Flows were around 300 cfs and fishable. I spent the better part of four hours tossing everything I had at the river. Nothing, Nada, one strike and it caught me of guard and wasn't fast enought to set the hook. All was not lost as it did provide me a chance to practice my casting and work out the cobwebs from the winter.
As a mentioned earlier, rivers are raging which is going to provide me with an opportunity to finally check out those local streams I've not fished near Angels Camp and Sonora, CA.
